Over the years, months, weeks, etc. there has been heated debates about everything pertaining to the Phantom world. Quite frankly, I'm not usually one to discuss or debate on a point which can be easily overlooked, but some statements I found were quite... eyecatching (not always in a bad way). I shall give my responses - love it, hate it, try to respect it, but remember they are all opinions. Keep in mind nobody ever quoted these statements; I'm only trying to give other phans a hint of what goes on in various discussions.

  1. "Who should be the Phantom in Lloyd Webber's upcoming movie?"
Guessed estimate: 70% would say Michael Crawford; 15% would go for any other experienced actor who portrayed the part in a show; 8% would want their favorite film actor (who, hopefully, can sing); 2% for Banderas; 5% would not give a damn and wish everyone would just shut up about this ancient topic. Vote!
Seems to some people that it's official with the news about Lord Webber choosing Banderas as the title role, judging from quite a number of media sources, including playbill.com. Just about every phan must have said 'What is he thinking?!' or wondered if he has literally gone out of his mind. I have seen Mr. Banderas sing with Sarah Brightman (original Christine) on a PBS showing of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 50th Birthday Celebration; honestly, he was better than I thought; however, he didn't meet my expectations. Why Webber chose him is beyond any logical reason, save for financial purposes.

  2. "Raoul is an annoying character and any true phan should despise him."
Guessed estimate of [30%] would probably agree; [50%] with only the 'annoying part'; [20%] who would defend him. Vote!
Not so... How is he annoying? Why are there Raoul-haters? Hate is a strong word, though the character is fictional. Opinions and viewpoints can be differentiated, but I can't imagine hating someone just because the handsome guy gets the girl in the end [or the other way around in some rarer cases] while the 'other' is left alone once again. I mean, c'mon - you've got to consider the details according to each rendition of the tale. Despite the many variations, most of the plots have Raoul as a naïve and young aristocrat, discovering love at the wrong time when his childhood sweetheart is under the control of another man. People may say he shouldn't have called Erik a 'monster' (I'm included in this category), but keep in mind though he may seem a grown man, he is at the prime of his manhood; he may have traces of his childhood scattered in him - this shows ignorance [the psychological child in him]. For Raoul to try and kill/trap/ensnare Erik is considered a sin - I disagree. Remember: Erik wanted Raoul out of the picture and therefore tried to kill him (though he has his reasons too), which makes the guy we're rooting for no better.

  3. "Should Christine have stayed with the Phantom in the end?"
Rough estimate of [50%] would probably have answered with: "Yes." with no thorough reason and an illogical analysis (ex: "Yes, she should stay. He has a beautiful soul and that's all that counts."); [20%] with "yes" using a thorough & interesting reason, with a logical analysis (ex: "Yes, she should stay, but she would probably have to consider the possibilities of her action and must be careful with her relationship. Perhaps she should discover more about him through friendship first, of course, and blah, blah."); and [30%] with "no" for their own reasons. Vote!
This question is mostly based on what one truly wishes to happen in the end and one's realization of Christine's point of view in the story. Of course, a majority of us would have stayed if we were in her hands, but the matter is not about us in this question - it is about the character. It is easier for us to say 'yes' if we were given the choice because we have not been in her shoes and look past any good reasons why she should not stay with him. Besides, since he did lose the girl in the end we sympathize for the Phantom more than ever; it's what makes the show a tragedy.

  4. "Leroux's story rules!"
    "No, Kay is better."
    "Not!"
    "Yeah!"
    "Leroux!"
    "Kay!"

It's kind of hard to give a poll on this one, but I'll split it 50/50 to keep it fair. Vote!
The answer all depends on what type of literary style you go for and your own opinion - nevertheless, there has been debates with some phans over which version is better, so therefore I'll give you my thoughts. If you're the type who enjoys a good mystery and would prefer to keep the story in its true and most original form, then it would take no rocket scientist to figure out you'd go for Leroux. For those who enjoy something of a darker and romantic nature [like me], Kay is definetly your type.
